What is erosion protection in coastal zones?

The majority of us will vaguely recall high school geography lessons about coastal erosion and the damaging effects of seawater on seawalls, jetties, groins, and other sea defences. The reason you may remember being shown a simulation of coastal erosion is because it is unbelievable – who knew a source as natural as seawater could cause so much damage?!

Repetitive wave action or exposure to seawater can cause structures to lose shape, size, and strength. This is precisely why erosion protection is needed.

Construction specialists use various techniques to quell or stop erosion protection in coastal zones; our preferred method involves the use of carbon fibre, which we use to tackle corroding components found in marina or harbour environments, or structures that are repeatedly drenched by seawater.

What is carbon fibre?

Carbon fibre (CF) is an extremely strong and versatile strengthening material. It is an epoxy composite made up of thin crystalline filaments of carbon and can be used in conjunction with other building materials such as polymer and plastic. Carbon fibre alone is not enough to protect structures from seawater. To achieve erosion protection in coastal zones, we use our bespoke TYFO Fibrwrap Systems.

  • Tyfo SEH-51 A Composite using Tyfo S epoxy – for protection of waterfront structures and structures in aggressive environments;
  • Tyfo SW1-S underwater epoxy – for strengthening and protection of structures in aggressive environments such as waterfront, chemical, and water treatment plants.

The type of TYFO Fibrwrap System is determined by a specialist after conducting a thorough on-site feasibility survey.

Which coastal structures can be treated with TYFO Fibrwrap Systems?

Most coastal structures and defences can be found in harbours, marinas, beaches, and other locations situated near seawater. The majority of these components that require erosion protection are made from concrete, steel, or timber.

This is not an exhaustive list:

  • Breakwaters
  • Bulkheads
  • Groins
  • Jetties
  • Seawalls

Pros of using TYFO Fibrwrap Systems as erosion protection in coastal zones

  • Anti-corrosive
  • High chemical resistance
  • Lightweight
  • Long-lasting
  • Low maintenance
  • Waterproof
