COLUMN STRENGTHENING

Duration:

2 Weeks

Project Details

Scope of Work: The Asticus Building is an architecturally notable development located in the City of Westminster, London. Designed with a cylindrical shape on a concrete frame in order to maximise light due to the proximity of nearby buildings.

CCUK provided an innovate structural solution as an alternative option to traditional methods that would have been time consuming and difficult to execute due to congestion of other buildings in the surrounding area.

The Challenge

Carbon Fibre Strengthening was required to the 4 reinforced concrete columns on the ground floor due to a required increase in applied loads brought on by the addition of upper floors to the building

To significantly add capacity to the ground floor columns of this 8 storey building whilst causing minimum disruption to the live reception area and keeping the geometry of said columns as small as possible.

The Solution

C 4 no 800 mm diameter columns required 8 layers of carbon fibre strengthening system to confine the concrete effectively and increase its compressive strength throughout. Working with the structural engineers CCUK provided a bespoke designed carbon fibre solution to meet the stringent design requirements.

The Result

CCUK provided an innovate structural solution as an alternative option to traditional methods that would have been time consuming and difficult to execute due to congestion of other buildings in the surrounding area.
