Project Details

Scope of Work: Scarborough County Council initiated a refurbishment project for the public toilet blocks in Castleton, a picturesque village in North Yorkshire. The council recognised the need to upgrade these facilities, which serve a popular area frequented by both locals and tourists. The project aimed to restore and modernise the structure, ensuring it remained functional and aesthetically pleasing while preserving its historical charm.

The Challenge

The toilet block structure had suffered from years of neglect, and the concrete roof, in particular, had deteriorated significantly. Water ingress over time had led to substantial roof degradation, making a full refurbishment essential to prevent further structural issues and ensure user safety. The project presented additional challenges, as adverse weather conditions could further impact the already compromised structure, making it crucial to conduct repairs in a controlled environment.

The Solution

To address these challenges, CCUK erected a full scaffold around the entire structure, including a temporary roof covering. This comprehensive scaffolding setup helped mitigate the risk of additional rain ingress during the repair period, creating a controlled environment conducive to the repair work. Additionally, heating was supplied throughout the project to maintain a suitable working temperature for the materials being applied, particularly critical for effective curing.

CCUK used high-quality products from SIKA for concrete repairs and crack injections, ensuring long-term durability. They also applied a liquid waterproofing membrane from Triflex to create a robust barrier against future water damage. This combination of protective measures and quality materials allowed the project to progress smoothly, reaching completion in just over a week.

The Result

The refurbishment was completed efficiently, restoring the structure’s integrity and enhancing its appearance. The upgraded toilet block now features a waterproof and durable roof that will resist future weathering and water ingress. The swift project completion and quality of work not only improved the immediate utility of the facilities but also contributed to preserving Castleton’s charm by ensuring the structure remains a reliable resource for both residents and visitors.
