Project Details

Scope of Work: During the construction of a new build, mixed-use development, the main contractor went into receivership, leaving the owners with a big problem. After initial checks had been carried out by the new contractor, it was found that significant areas of the building, did not have the required steel strengthening, in fact, it was found over 300 individual areas, at different locations, were affected.

The Challenge

The project involves the strengthening of an existing concrete frame currently under construction for a mixed-use development. Over the course of this process, more than 300 individual areas of the concrete structure will be reinforced using Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems, a cutting-edge solution known for its high-performance capabilities. The Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems are applied strategically to enhance the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the frame, ensuring it meets the demands of both residential and commercial spaces. This comprehensive strengthening work involves careful assessment and treatment of each area, ensuring that the overall structure is fully prepared for future use and is in compliance with modern engineering standards and safety regulations.

The Solution

CFRP offers superior tensile strength being extremely lightweight and incredibly strong, making it an ideal material for historical restorations. Unlike traditional materials, CFRP can be applied without adding significant weight to the structure, which is crucial in preserving the bridge’s original design. Additionally, it allowed for targeted repairs that did not require extensive dismantling of the bridge, further safeguarding its historical appearance.

The Result

The comprehensive strengthening of the concrete frame across more than 300 individual areas using Tyfo Fibrwrap Systems successfully enhanced the structural integrity of the three large buildings under construction. Over a period of 20 weeks, the focus on flexure and punching shear ensured the buildings met the required safety standards for both durability and load-bearing capacity. The final application of Fibrwrap’s 4-hour Fire Protection Coating further reinforced the structure’s fire resilience, providing long-term protection and ensuring the mixed-use development is both safe and robust for its intended use.
