What is hydrophobic and hydrophilic leak sealing?

If your building or structure leaks, there is a good chance that hydrophobic or hydrophilic leak sealing will be recommended to you as a solution. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic leak sealing is cost-effective and long-lasting, and the majority of concrete repairs contractors know how to do it.

What do hydrophobic and hydrophilic mean?

Hydrophobic means `fear of water`; thus, hydrophobic leak sealing is used on materials or environments that repel water, such as gas vents.

Hydrophilic means the opposite – water-loving! And so, hydrophilic leak sealing is used on materials or environments that thrive around water, like liquid filtration processes.

The difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic leak sealing is all down to how the solutions respond to water; hydrophobic leak sealing is used in water-repelling environments, and hydrophilic leak sealing is used in environments that thrive around water.

Both are biological terms that are not limited to the construction industry.

An easy way to remember is phobic – phobia, and phobias mean fears!

Types of leak sealing solutions

At CCUK, our concrete repairs specialists are experienced in applying `leak tight` solutions. We frequently provide the following services to clients with structural leaks:

  • Hydrophobic resin injections
  • Hydrophilic resin injections
  • Polyurethane resin injections
  • Curtain wall grouting
  • Ground stabilisation

Typically, our specialists conduct a `feasibility survey` before deciding on which leak sealing solution is needed. This involves visiting your building or structure to analyse the cause of the leaks, the materials they’ll be working with, and a range of other factors.
